What's the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist in Saskatchewan?
In Saskatchewan, 'Registered Dietitian' (RD) is a legally protected title regulated by the Saskatchewan College of Dietitians. RDs complete a four-year accredited degree, a competitive clinical internship, and a national licensing exam, and they're accountable to a regulatory body. 'Nutritionist' has no legal protection in Saskatchewan, so anyone can use it. For medical conditions like diabetes or heart disease, you want an RD.
Is a dietitian covered by insurance in Saskatchewan?
Not by Sask Health (Medicare), but yes by most extended health and employer benefits plans. Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield and many others cover Registered Dietitian services — usually somewhere between $300 and $1,000 per year per family member. We provide receipts you submit directly to your insurer.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
Almost never. You can book directly. A few insurance plans require a physician's referral for reimbursement — it's worth a 60-second check with your benefits provider before your first session.
What does a first session actually look like?
Conversational and unhurried. We talk about what's going on, your medical and nutrition history, your goals, your culture, and what you've already tried. No food diaries you have to bring, no weigh-ins, no surprise plan handed to you. We finish with one or two small, livable next steps you choose.
Will you put me on a meal plan or tell me what to eat?
No. Rigid meal plans don't work for most people and aren't the most evidence-based approach for long-term health. We build flexible patterns and skills together — meal frameworks, plate-building ideas, recipe tweaks for your conditions — that fit how you actually live.
Are you weight-inclusive? Will I have to weigh in?
Yes, we're weight-inclusive, and no, weigh-ins are not part of standard sessions. If weight is medically relevant to your situation, we'll talk about it in a thoughtful way — but it's never the scoreboard. We focus on labs, energy, blood sugar, blood pressure, relationship with food, and quality of life.
Can I see you virtually if I'm outside Regina?
Absolutely. We see clients across Saskatchewan virtually — from Saskatoon and Moose Jaw to Estevan, Yorkton, Prince Albert, La Ronge and everywhere in between. Sessions run on secure, easy-to-use video.
Do you work with my doctor or care team?
Gladly, with your permission. Coordinated care produces better outcomes — we can send session notes to your physician, endocrinologist, midwife or specialist so everyone is on the same page.
